Winter League R5

Winter League Round 5,  Sunday 15th December:

This is how a fur and feather should be, unfortunately it was not as close as it could have been as Mark Gratton un-sportingly bagged a couple of skimmers late on for the win, otherwise it would have been a close call with everyone scratching.  There were a lot of size 22 hooks, pinkies, 1 mill bread punch and squats being thrown at the redfins and gonks and whilst the fish were numerous for some, they were not what you would call a ‘decent’ stamp.  Adrian Hill came out on top of the ‘eyes’ bashing, just one ounce ahead of Rob Fowler in third.  The result does put ‘Sailor’ top of the league with a 4 point lead.   Kevin Hill recorded the lowest weight with 1/8oz!

It was good to see so many turn out in what were bracing conditions, a big thank you to the Brendon Arms for looking after us for the post match meal and to the Team at Waterfront Shooting and Fishing who provided a welcome cup of soup half way through.

Winter League R4

Winter League Round 4,  Sunday 24th November:

With many of the ‘big names’ missing it was Ady Larkins who took full advantage, winning easily off the ‘Wooden’ Bonus Peg, which sadly only netted an additional £19.  Then gain, a win is a win.  BT found a few skimmers to bank 3lbs and secure the runner up spot and go 2 points clear at the top of the League.  Jack Crystal won the junior section but was third overall, beating Steve Whitehouse by an ounce.

Winter League R3

Winter League Round 3,  Sunday 10th November:

With double figure bags of silvers coming out in the week, there was confidence of a few decent weights (at least in the Lower Basin), but as is so often the case, come match day everything changed.

On a day dominated by punch caught roach (many complaining afterwards they had not brought any bread!), you really needed a bonus fish to get into the money.  It was a big old 4lb slab that gave Simon Allen the bonus he needed to give him his first victory of the year on Bude Canal.  Mark Gratton stuck at the bigger stuff, alternating between pole, waggler and tip to find five bites for five fish and a 4lb bag of skimmers for second place.  Paul Braund managed to keep the punch going all day off peg 13 and banked 84 roach for 2lbs 1oz, with no fish over an ounce!

Section wins went to Dick Turner in the Lower Basin with 2lbs and Tony Johns in the Second Basin with 1lb 5ozs, both finding a skimmer or two.

Jack Crystal did manage to find some fish off end peg 33 and won the Junior Section with 5ozs.

Winter League R2

Winter League Round 2,  Sunday 27th October:

The second consecutive match held with ‘coffee’ coloured water, but at least the sun shone and the overall conditions were good.

As expected the Lower Basin produced the skimmers and the top two weights came from pegs 16 and 19 respectively.  Dave Allen broke his winning drought with an 11lb bag of skimmers on the long pole, he was chased all the way by Adrian Hill who fell short with 8lbs 10ozs.  It was a case of what might have been for Mat Sampson on peg 27 after he switched from targeting carp to skimmers at the half way mark, and still managed a creditable 8lbs for third place.

Jack Crystal won the Junior section with a personal best 7lbs 3ozs, which would have seen him finish fourth overall.

The Lower Basin section went to Rob Fuller on end peg 12 with 5lbs of bits and Simon Allen took the Second Basin section win with a few less ‘bits’ for 4lbs 1oz.

Winter League 2019/20 R1

Winter League Round 1,  Sunday 13th October:

With the heavily colored water everyone was hoping for a red peg, and as the match unfolded the Lower Basin was the place to be.  As is often the case the result was ‘bookended’ with the two end pegs in the section producing the biggest weights.

Rob Fuller’s 10lb 1oz winning bag was helped by a 5lb 1oz slab off peg 19, just enough to keep in front of Dick Turner who had a late run of bream on the 11 meter pole, but ultimately fell 2ozs short with 9lbs 15ozs.  Simon Allen placed third with a mixed bag of silvers off peg 15, many on the short pole and over 1lb in front of section winner Steve Whitehouse who bagged 7lbs off peg 18.

The second Basin saw a lot of fish brought to the scales but not very much in the way of quality.  A couple of decent perch and a bonus eel gave Dave Allen on unfancied peg 29 the section win, being just 1oz shy of 5lbs.

Pairs League Final

Pairs League Round 8

Sunday 6th October

Perhaps Me and my Boy had taken their ‘eye’ off the ball (or float) with the title already in the bag, but it was an uncharacteristic fourth place for the champions as the other big hitters battled it out for the final pairs win of the season.

There was an ounce between the top three on the Middle Pound but it was Peter Giles who came out on top by that ounce beating Ady Larking and Paul Braund who dead heated with 3lbs 8ozs of redfins for second.  11lb 11ozs was enough for Adrian Hill to finish second and the Bude Bay Pirates take the overall victory (after a re-count at the weigh-in!).  Lake expert Kevin Hill won the Whalesborough section with 12lbs but partner Ady was unable to find that extra half  ounce that would have given the Lager Louts the win, it did however push them above the Tiscott Boys to finish third in the League by half a point.
