Whalesborough Lake and Hele Bridge Pond

The opening match of the 2026/27 season was a pairs contest held in overcast, showery conditions with sections in the Stock Pond and Whalesborough Lake.  As anticipated in the Stock Pond the best catches came from the Museum end, but it was a surprise that the shallower water pegs in the Lake did not produce as anticipated.

Steve Maynard took full advantage of drawing the Wall peg in the Stock Pond, and quickly amassed a catch of mainly brown goldfish for a section winning weight of 12lbs 6ozs.  Partner Rob Fuller bagged a couple of large carp from peg 51 in the Lake to finish second in section and the Team winning the contest by a 2 point margin.

Andy Southey won the Lake section with a 43lb haul of carp that included two double figure commons.  With stand in partner Brian Powel finishing in 4th place with 3lb 13ozs it was enough to give AB Angling the runner up spot.

There were concerns over the condition of the newly stocked carp in the Lake as many had sores on them and a few had clear braid cuts.  The Association will be monitoring the situation closely but in the meantime we ask everyone to clean and dry their nets  thoroughly and not to use braid (a rule change on the latter will be considered shortly).
