Winter League, 6, Sunday 11th February:
An icy northerly wind with wintry showers made for tough conditions, especially for those drawing the Lower Basin. The match itself was effectively decided in the first and last 30 minutes of the contest. Paul Braund was off to a flyer on end peg 26, landing an 8lb carp from his second cast of the day. That fish was winning the contest until Matt Sampson, fishing the other end of the section on peg 33 netted a 1olb carp with just 30 minutes to go. The only other fish to come out of the Second Basin was a 9oz skimmer caught early doors by Tony Hillas. The other 5 anglers in the section blanked although Rob Fuller did briefly have a carp on at the end of the match but his light tackle was no match and he lost the fish trying to 'bully' it to the net under the 15 minutes landing rule.
Trevor Vernalls was the only angler to find the silvers in any numbers and he battled the Lower Basin strong wind to bag nearly 4lbs on the long pole to finish third. Steve Whithouse did manage to net a 3lb slab to take the section win.
With Simon Allen blanking (I think Tony Hillas reminded Si throughout the 5 hours), the top of the winter league has closed up with 4 anglers in the frame, latest odds from Braundy Betting: Simon Allen 5/9, Peter Slade 1/1, Tony Hillas 3/2, Adrian Hill 100/30.
May you all draw lucky.
