Winter League Round 6, - Sunday 13th January:
It was a bold decision to leave out the Second Basin in preference of the Bird Hide but as it turned out the result was more balanced between the sections than in previous contests.
The wind was an issue in the Lower Basin with most anglers keeping to the feeder and it was a method that worked for Dave Allen. Dave bagged a 4lb slab on the feeder, and with a couple of other skimmers easily won the contest from favoured peg 16. However, it was not the Lower Basin show as expected with Paul Braund battling away on Bird Hide peg 44 and bagging 80 small roach to the punch (plus a bonus 8oz skimmer) to sneak into second spot. Mark Gratton found a few small skimmers and roach from the Lower Basin to finish in third with 2lbs 10ozs.
Len Hancock was 2ozs off the Lower Basin pace but secured a section win with 2lb 8ozs, and Adrian Hill was only lacking a bonus fish to finish higher up the rankings as he banked 1lb 15ozs of roach on the punched bread to win the Bird Hide section.
Junior angler Jack Crystal was on tricky peg 20 and was always up against it with the wind howling up the canal all day so it was no surprise he could not catch on this occasion.
Dave is the 10th different winner this year so the last chance match is going to be sparsely attended the way things are going.
