Summer League Round 9, Sunday 21st August - Phyllis Turner Cup:
The forecast gales and rain diminished the field for the annual Roach 'n' Rudd match and the weatherman proved correct as the 12 anglers endured the high winds before getting a two hour soaking to finish. The number of fish banked on the day was impressive but the size poor with nothing in the 1lb range as would have been expected and lots of half ouncers.
It may have been a different format but the result was familliar with Simon Allen bagging 6lbs of our red finned friends to beat league leader Nathan Underwood by a clear 3lbs. Ian Gray would have challenged hard for second but his best fished turned out to be a hybrid so was relegated to 3rd place with his 3lb haul.
Tony Johns continued his run of good form falling just an ounce behind Ian Gray to win the Lower Basin section. Peter Slade picked up a few better roach on the hemp in later hours of the contest which pushed him clear for the Second Basin section win.
Whilst it looks all over at the top of the league the fight is on for third place with Ian Gray and Matt Sampson level. Could Tony Johns get into the top five? Pete Slade is nervously looking over his shoulder with Johnsey on fire as we go into the last match and only 2.5 points behind.
